'Holiday' with Ross: a not-so-quick overview, part 4

2008.12.02

We apparently walked right past the last night of the year for Australian Idol, being held right outside the Opera House.

Ross had fun being artsy. I had fun laughing at him crouching in the shrubbery.

Doesn't this look CG?!?

Who knew we would be subjected to peril in the Sydney Botanical Gardens?

Ross made another avian friend

I love the contrast in Sydney between ultra modern glass skyscrapers and old-fashioned stone buildings decorated with sculptures and gargoyles.

For some reason this struck me as inordinately amusing. I wanted to find some confused curator and explain that in order to find the gardens all he needed to do was walk towards the Opera House.

This was the first stop on our bike tour, where the guide took us to get accustomed to the bikes. So while I was weaving my shaky way around the quad trying not to run over some unlucky pedestrian, Ross was trying to memorize the odd main brake position, so that he didn't go (according to our guide) "A over Apple".

That's my look that says, "You're taking another picture of me with this awful helmet? Really?"

How Ross manages to look cool in a bike helmet I have yet to understand.

We stopped briefly on the Sydney Harbor Bridge to make suitable sounds of awe and (of course) take pictures.

That's our guide behind Ross, an interesting older gentleman full of stories about the city.

Apparently this is the ugliest building in Sydney; there were supposed to be three on the site, but after the first one was built, there was such an outcry that the other two were canceled. I don't see it myself, uncultured, ugly American that I am.

Isn't this a beautiful church? I was thrilled! It's apparently St. Mary's Cathedral, the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, and the only reason I didn't drag Ross all the way around it and inside to take more pictures was due to time constraints.

This is for you, Jenny.

The Botanical Gardens have become infested with bats in recent years, and they've come to be considered a major pest. All the same, it was pretty cool to see tons of bats hanging out in trees at the park. It made me feel even more the comparison between Sydney and Batman's Gotham City, though technically Gotham was supposed to be situated in the States (and no one in the cartoons talks with an Australian accent!).

Look, the Opera House, again!

Ross and I had a discussion about whether they would really act like dominoes. I suggested we not find out unless he was prepared to run really fast!

This is for you, dad!

The photos here cover a bit of sight-seeing we did after coming back from Watson's Bay, and the bike tour we took the next day. By the time we got to the botanical gardens (again) and were given an opportunity to photograph the Opera House (again) we were both feeling rather blasé about the experience. However, we did see some quite nice areas throughout the rest of Sydney, and we rode out onto the Sydney Harbor Bridge, which was pretty cool.
